It is frequently changing, but if you were to look at buying an eBook reader, you might be interested like me to know that the Kobo is now $128 while the Kindle is $139. Close, yes? Or is it? If you are interested in buying a Kindle, you really should read: What’s the real price of an Amazon Kindle in Canada? at the Parenting: Curious Dad blog.
Caveat Emptor.
Despite all the e-ink supposed benefits, an iPad or equivalent tablet is a superior way to consume e-books. Even $100 is probably too expensive for a one-trick pony. And I own a Kindle, but it’s only used when I go to cottage country (better battery life gets kind of important there).
Interesting. I guess I like the price point of the Kobo and it’s limited function is appealing in a way. But yes, the iPad (or other tablets) will eventually take over this area, I think.
I forgot to mention, Chad Skelton wrote one of the weakest pieces I read about the iPad: Should you buy an iPad? I’m still not convinced (http://communities.canada.com/vancouversun/blogs/parenting/archive/2010/05/31/buy-ipad-apple-price.aspx). I can think about many good reasons why you may not want to buy an iPad, but his review based on a short visit to the Apple Store is very shallow. That, or Chad and I are just in opposite ends on the gadget adoption spectrum.
I actually agree with him on the individual points about an iPad, but there are alot more reasons TO get one that he doesn’t address. All IT has limitations, and if you focus on them, you wouldn’t get any of it. I like my iPod shuffles, for example, but there are alot of reasons not to get one compared to other iPods. However, they have key qualities that for me make them worthwhile and outweigh the limitation.
LOL! Maybe I’m the only one on that end of the gadget adoption spectrum. Chad’s individual points (weight, size, price) are all valid. I also would like a tablet that’s lighter, thinner and cheaper, but that does not exist yet. Comparing it with netbooks or e-readers or the iPod Touch is somewhat like saying that I don’t like the iPod Touch because it’s so much bulkier, heavier and more expensive than the shuffle. They simply fill different needs, but a short visit to the Apple Store would probably not suffice to understand what those needs are. Having said that, I think no one knows for sure if the iPad concept is a fad, or an unnecessary gadget, or something really new and needed. When the next version comes out, we’ll probably have a better idea, as the novelty wears off.
I think, if anything, tablets are going to be THE hot thing for 2011. The novelty will not wear off soon, I predict.
Hi!
What kind of e readers support Russian? I`d like to read russian books.
I believe the Sony ebook reader supports Cyrillic text. I am not sure about the Kindle or the Kobo, though. The Nook may as well.
