While I am a big fan of Microsoft Project and other project tools, you can still do some good planning with a spreadsheet system like Excel. This article shows you a nice way to do Gantt charts using only Excel. For small projects, this could be a good way to go.

Totally agree. Especially when you are tracking.
It is good to know the concepts of MS Project, but it is more important to know PM concepts and the objective of the tool is to primarily convert the information and not RUN the project. People run the project not tools.
