The cold plunge, or good things don’t have to last long to provide longer term benefits

Lately I’ve been going out on my porch or on my girlfriend’s balcony to do a dry “cold plunge”: stepping out into the winter air for a brief period of time until it gets to the point I can’t bear it. It isn’t long, but like people who do cold water plunges, I feel I get some of the same benefits. (If you make snow angels, I recommend dressing appropriately. :))

It’s a good remind to me that good things don’t have to last long to provide longer term benefits.  Sometimes 10 seconds is all you need, as I wrote about, here: My 10 seconds of happiness exercise | Smart People I Know

  1. I do a similar “dry, cold plunge” in my sunroom. There’s a woman in my town who is 60 who used to swim every day at noon at our local beach. I would go & watch her everyday & marvel at how she could swim for 7-10 minutes in -20 temps, while I had to bundle up in layers of warm clothing. It inspired me to try to do *something similar….so when it’s freezing, I’ve made a habit to walk everyday for at least an hour, AND to go out into my unheated sunroom in the evening to look at the stars. It makes you feel very grounded & very small (in a good way) It also makes you feel very grateful that you can be warm & comfortable again, when you go back inside. 🙂

    1. Excellent! I think more people should find their own version of the cold plunge! And yes, gratitude is one of the benefits of it. (I like coming in from the cold when a stew is cooking, because not only is it warm but it in inviting in that way too.
