Questions for the time.com article: Why Africa Is Still Starving

In response to the article TIME has on Why Africa Is Still Starving, a number of questions came to mind:

1) Is Africa still starving? All of Africa, or just a part of it? The article mentions Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. While these are signifigant parts of Africa, they are not all of Africa, and I don’t think all of Africa is starving. A more accurate title might have been “Why Northeast Africa is Still Starving”.

2) Is aid from the west a key contributor to the problem? Reading the article, it seems that way to me. However, this article on the Economist.com indicates something else: “too many people eking out a living on too little land, depending on rains that can never be relied on”. At least in Ethiopia. Somalia and Kenya are not mentioned in the Economist article.

3) Are all three countries having the same problems? And are Uganda or the Sudan — nearby neighbors — having the same problems?

It is a good article. It is good to search for and read other sources and to think critically about the situation, too.

  1. Bernie, you point out that it can be difficult to get your head around a complex problem, much less find a way to ‘solve’ it, assuming that is even a realistic objective in the sense of having preconceived answer. Not only do we need to take into account the nuances of the specific context but also unexpected side-effects.

  2. Norbert, good point. It seems almost logical to say that the solution to famine is to provide people food. But it leads to a state that may be unsustainable. A much better state is to remove the causes of famine and to buffer them against them returning

There’s alot more good material on famine here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famine

  3. I wish I could donate to a “REAL” agency who is helping Kapsokwony instead of receiving Facebook requests from individuals. Western Union advises NOT to send money to individuals in foreign countries. I wish I knew for SURE if the people of Kapsokwony Kenya are truly starving, and if they are WHO will go in and help them? They need food AND clean water and mosquito nets, clothing and shoes from what I hear, and shipping is out of the world expensive. I understand there are also many disabled individuals who live there, and the children take them out of their mud huts in the mornings and help them get out where they can beg all day and then they take them back inside for the night. I have asked Samaritan’s Purse for help for them, and they are already set up in Kenya, but do not know when they can go to that particular area. It is time for somebody to do something about the poor of Kenya, and the starving people of Kenya and the disabled.
