How to stay on Facebook but get a better handle on your privacy while you are there

Alot of people are using ReclaimPrivacy.org, a Facebook Privacy Scanner. I’ve tried it and it’s pretty effective. It will give you a rundown of where you may have potential exposures, and try to take action to correct openings you may want to close. Highly worthwhile to check this out.

  1. Excellent find Bernie! Except that it is pretty draconian on some of the settings, personally I like people to spread my website address 😀

Took a quick look at the code off hand it seems safe enough though.

  2. Thanks for providing a bona fide user comment about ReclaimPrivacy dot org. I’ve been reading about their existence the past few days (they are entirely donation funded!) but nothing about anyone who tried it. Seems like anti-spyware for my Facebook profile, which is certainly something I could benefit from.

What do you think about this diaspora dot org alternative to Facebook? Talk about good timing for them! But I don’t really understand their open Facebook concept. Similarly, I don’t understand how that is different than OpenLike, another open source effort that is to be an FB alternative. But that might be due to my computing literacy, or lack thereof.

    1. I think diaspora is a good thing. I am not sure if it will replace FB, but there clearly is a hunger for the next big thing in social computing. We’ve come along way from AOL to Friendster (which is still big in parts of the world) to MySpace to Facebook. I think there will be more and more social platforms for people to share and communicate with. It’s Facebook’s to lose at this point. Let’s see what happens.

      Thanks for the comments.
