Who disagrees with Christopher Hitchens on capital punishment? Christopher Hitchens

Here he is in 2011, Staking a Life – Lapham’s Quarterly, on capital punishment. And here is is in Slate in 2006, Don’t hang Saddam. – By Christopher Hitchens – Slate Magazine.

I am not sure if he changed his opinion or not, but I found it interesting how he refers to Saddam with regards to capital punishment and whether or not he deserved it.

  1. Thanks for sharing this remarkable essay “Staking a Life”. There are so many questions, many unanswered, when one thinks of “death penalty”. As far as I am concerned, I cannot imagine – were I living in the US – voting for someone who would declare himself/herself “tough on crime and in favour of DP”, as if by legally killing someone would erradicate other criminal acts. That would mean he/she would kill in my name. I think we are all aware that there are other ways to protect society from dangerous, mentally ill and sick criminals. Life without parole is one of them. “Les réalités sociales de certaines minorités en sont une autre approche, en amont” (sorry, can’t say this very well in English). Maybe one day DP will be abolished, not so much for ethical reasons but more for economical ones. Also for the fear of executing someone who would be proven innocent later on.
