You likely have come across Fredkin’s paradox without even knowing it has a name. As wikipedia states
“Fredkin’s paradox reads “The more equally attractive two alternatives seem, the harder it can be to choose between them—no matter that, to the same degree, the choice can only matter less.” Thus, a decision-making agent might spend the most time on the least important decisions.
No doubt once you read that, you will think: oh yeah, that just happened to me!
As for how to deal with it, I do two things:
- Flip a coin, knowing both outcomes are equally matched, so it doesn’t matter which one you pick.
- Write down the choice I made so I can assess later that, yeah, the outcome I picked was fine.
