Have you heard of…A.I.? Of course you have! You can’t go anywhere lately without reading or seeing something about AI. Not even the Kardashians can generate this much interest or hype about something. It’s incredible.
I’ve been collecting a number of links on the topics, which I’ve grouped below. As well, I have been blogging all week on the topic, trying to give my perspective on it all.
Things are changing rapidly when it comes to this subject. I hope these things help you gain a better understanding of where things stand at the moment, even if it is a brief moment.
Ideas/thoughts on AI:
- A good piece: Why Do A.I. Chatbots Tell Lies and Act Weird?
- A non-expert but useful insight on AI from Josh Marshall at TalkingPointsMemo. Another opinion comes from Noam Chomsky, who weighs in on the limits of AI.
- Vox is somewhat upbeat on the capabilities of the latest AI, while the Guardian is downbeat on AI.
- Speaking of downbeat, here’s why the misuse of AI leads to problems: Why AI surveillance at work leads to perverse outcomes.
- AI is everywhere: AI is coming to the field of law. Also medicine, as places like Boston Children’s hospital looks to hire a prompt engineer.
- Speaking of the law, keep an eye on this: Congress looks to regulate AI
- More and more people are talking about AGI. If you want to know more about it, read about Artificial general intelligence (AGI) in wikipedia.
Tools and technologies:
- To understand why Microsoft is going big with this stuff, it helps to read the history of Bing. Here’s more on Bing and Bard from Google, too.
- AI is everywhere at Microsoft. They are going to add AI to your 365 tools with copilot. Also you can get ChatGPT services in Azure. Wow.
- Want more? Here’s some ChatGPT browser extensions you can use. DuckDuckGo has a limited AI addition as well.
- Speaking of ChatGPT, here’s more on GPT4 from the New York Times. Gary Marcus is not a fan.
- If you want to see just how bad ChatGPT can be, you will want to read this piece in Runners World on how ChatGPT dispense running advice. Truly awful.
- Even non AI companies like Spotify are taking advantage of AI.
- It’s not like everyone is embracing AI. Glaze is a tool artists can use to stop AI companies from stealing their artwork. Good. Not so good these days: voice assistants. Do you still use siri, alexa, and google assistant?. These once promising AI tools are now tarnished.
Science:
- One place where the use of AI is paying off is science. Scientists are using AI to sift through data in the fields of metals, biology, and agriculture. The good thing about scientists is that the even admit when they have they have not been successful. Unlike, say, Silicon Valley.
Finally:
- Roger Schank passed away. He was a leader in the field of AI.
- Cool stuff: OpenWorm project is an example of just how complex organisms are.
- I am normally a fan of our world in data, but their brief history of AI is far too rosy for me.

I have been a long time non-lover of pinot grigio. (See

Flaco, in case you haven’t heard, is an Eurasian eagle-owl that escaped the Central Park Zoo when vandals opened his enclosure. The zookeepers tried to lure him back to capitivity, but he wasn’t having it. They weren’t being mean: there was a good chance he could die in the wild, even if the wild currently consists of Central Park. Instead, he seems to be thriving, flying around the park and dining on the many rats available to him.

This piece in Slate on veterinarians is very good and very grim:

It’s been a tumultuous time when it comes to the current workplace, or at least business writers think so.
